Waterberg Plateau
The wind sweeps the ever shifting dune landscapes in a timeless rhythm, abounding wildlife roams the saline plains, fog banks settles with a mystical aura over the ocean, raw, arid, and unforgiving at times yet breathtakingly pure, such is the ageless beauty of Namibia.
The awesome flat-topped Waterberg Plateau is situated east from the town of Otjiwarongo and towers 200 metres high over the surrounding plains. The unique plateau is largely formed of sandstone and sculptured in fascinating shapes. It is an extraordinary place as though frozen in time, evocative of the era when prehistoric dinosaurs roamed the area. This area was the scene of a terrible massacre of the Herero people by the German colonists in 1904 and a graveyard within the Waterberg Plateau Park is a sorrowful reminder of the tragedy.
At the base of the flat-topped plateau is an outstanding rest camp with a restaurant and shop, charming affordable bungalows offering amazing views, a huge sparkling swimming pool, and grassy camping grounds under shaded Acacia trees. Walk along the well-marked paths leading around the plateau or relax under the trees in the camp and listen to the chattering of the parrots.
The varied terrain of wooded areas, grasslands and fertile ravines are particularly well suited for hiking. Leopard, buffalo, black and white rhino, endangered roan and sable antelope live atop the magnificent plateau and is well protected. Explore the top of the plateau on a guided game viewing vehicle or on a guided wilderness trail, discover the diverse plant life, and stand in awe atop the plateau taking in the breathtaking scenery. The freshwater springs attracts abounding species of birds including magnificent black eagles. Waterberg Plateau is a geographical wonder formed by the forces of nature, a spectacular edifice amid breathtaking surroundings, truly a paradise for nature lovers to explore.
