About Tsumkwe
browse (1 / 3)

The town of Tsumkwe is situated in the North Eastern part of Namibia and used to be known as Eastern Bushmanland, which was the former homeland of the San and Bushman tribes. Though it is a rather small settlement consisting of a few shops, a bottle store, and trading shops – and usually advertised to be far bigger than what it really is – Tsumkwe is actually a town of immense charm and intrigue especially with its colourful history pertaining to the San people. In fact, historians and avid anthropologists find visiting the likes of Tsumkwe quite rewarding as they explore and discover remnants that used to be parts of Eastern Bushmanland. One standout feature here would have to be the striking collection of wildlife that can be viewed.

The nearby Khaudum Game Reserve epitomizes this and is a definite must visit as it boasts a magnificent collection of animals to view namely the lion, cheetah, leopard, and other large mammals. The greater Tsumkwe area is also known as one of the few places the endangered African Wild Dog can be seen as this animal has several notable packs scattered throughout the area. Visitors would also do well to have a look around some of the local villages and soak up the unique atmosphere and culture they are renowned for, while camping in these parts is a truly rewarding experience too. The best months for game viewing are done from August to December while the wet season from January to April usually brings with it many excellent bird watching opportunities where visitors will have the privilege of seeing a few endangered species.
