About Opuwo
browse (1 / 3)

Situated in the North West part of Namibia is the enchanting desert town of Opuwo. With Namibia showcasing different contrasting landscapes, Opuwo is yet another terrific location that displays the more arid and harsh conditions that this Southern African country is mainly known for. Opuwo is the capital of the Kunene Region and is some 700km north of the country’s capital city of Windhoek; it is also the gateway or disembarkation point to the magical Kaokoland. Kaokoland is one of the last remaining wilderness areas in the region and is blessed with spectacular scenery as well as being the home of the indigenous Himba peoples and rare desert wildlife such as elephant, black rhino, and giraffe.

The Himba peoples are an intriguing draw card for travellers to Opuwo as this tribe has managed to impressively maintain its ethnic heritage and individuality within the secluded confines of Kaokoland. Opuwo has the added benefits of being calm and peaceful with a sense of tranquility exuding throughout the town; travellers to these parts will be able to really get away from it all and rejuvenate their tired minds and bodies. The town has convenient amenities in close proximity namely a petrol station and several shops, as well as different accommodation options. Furthermore, the Epupa Falls is a great day trip excursion visitors can enjoy during their stay in Opuwo; easy to access and a journey you can take without the assistance of a tour guide, the Epupa Falls is yet another example of the wonderful contrasts the country of Namibia has been blessed with.
