Our visit to Sendelingsdrif and Richtersfeld was part of a route from Cape Town to Swakopmund via the Namib desert and back south again via Ai Ais, crossing northbound into Namibia on the pontoon. The camp was a delightful experience - clean, well equipped and well located for excursions into the Richtersveld. There had been some doubt planted in our mind as to whether the pontoon really was operational as several Namibians we had spoken to beforehand were not aware it was!! It did operate and very efficiently too although the border staff on the north side appeared worn out having handled all of 9 cars in the first few hours of the day (a busy day apparently!!). In the event, it was a unique experience and far better than the southbound crossing at Viollsdrif. We travelled 4 up in a Toyota Rav 4 with a luggage trailer. The road from Alexander Bay was badly rutted and the roads in the park were also pretty rough but the Rav handled them without any problems so this route is not just for the big 4X4 off-roader folk. This is a truly wonderful corner of the country and well worth the extra time and effort to get there. The camp itself is fascinating as it sits within a working diamond mining area with all the comings and goings of heavy plant yet it is peaceful and very close to some of the most dramatic scenery and plant life you could hope to see all adding upto a memorable experience.
