At Namibia’s north-western border with Angola, one will find the Epupa Falls on the Kunene River. Amongst the many things that are available to do in Namibia, this is one worthwhile visit to Epupa Falls. This place is so remote, so unspoiled, it almost seems as though time has stood still in this place alone while progress has moved on elsewhere leaving this little piece of paradise where it is to carry on as it always has.
Epupa Falls has richly coloured rock walls as well as a dense variety of trees making this a prime scenic destination for tourists traveling to Namibia. The rushing water has a seasonal peak flow of 500 000 liters per second and occasionally 1, 000 000 liters per second. Guided nature walks will allow you to see the main falls up close as well as the little side falls along the path, which are not always visible. Hundreds of little rock pools provide relaxation and a oneness with nature. It is here that you will meet the traditional Himba people.
This extraordinary tribe will be a definite highlight for any visitor as they teach you about their ancient traditions and their way of life. Guided visits to these placid people, whose Himba villages are temporary due to their nomadic nature, can be arranged. The Himba (or Ochre) people follow their goats, cattle as well as the seasonal rains as their ancestors have done since their existence.
A traditional Himba Village is comprised of the chief, his wives, and their children. The traditional women and children in an Himba village keep their skin and hair coated in a stunning mixture of butter, ash, and red ochre that works as a sun screen and keeps their skin looking very young and this is from where they get their name.
